How come we don’t like to sit through things that are long? Whether it’s a long show, movie, presentation, reading or homily, we just don’t have the attention span for long things. Here we are staying at home waiting and we don’t like it. I wanted a few good snow days to get some things done but not this. It is a different way of living, as it should be, as we make decisions to protect others and ourselves. Back to “long” things, we would all like to be in church today to listen to the longest Gospel proclamation of the year: The Passion of Jesus Christ. Let us learn from our tradition and what we accept readily. We do have the stamina to endure when we find it central to our faith, to the story that we carry with us. We know that the length of the Passion narrative is filled with detail that we all find important. We know that the long suffering will lead to eternal glory. This eternal glory will be revealed to us in the days ahead by “appearances” as Jesus appeared to the women and His disciples. After the long story that needed to be told, Easter will open us up to joy revealed in glimpses. Let us hold out for the glimpses of the Risen Christ, our beautiful church and the faces of one another!
